"Keep Lionel Super O track running clean"

An ongoing word first mode back in ...

2003

Q. My nightmare! I have 700 pieces of Super O train track made past Lionel in the 1950'southward. it has tarnish and some little spots of rust, simply starting in tiny spots only the tarnish is bad. the eye rail is copper and the base ties are resin plastic the tracks are of a unknown though magnetic metal that has a contumely type color to it when clean. I have to clean all the track, and was wondering since I know that time is a gene, as well equally the number of separate parts there are. is there a way to clean it with out pain the plastic ? with some kind of a dip wait and rinse, then dry. as whatsoever other means is just to much work, and replacement new is the alternative. and the cost for that is several thousand dollars for the accompanying parts to all fit together correctly.

A. Hi boyfriend Super O Track owners.

700 pieces of track, that is a lot of rails! I accept approx. 250+ pieces not including switches and all the pocket-size stuff. Needless to say you lot have a daunting challenge ahead of you. I hand cleaned all of mine using everything from 0000 steel wool [affil. link to info/product at Rockler], scotch guard pads and sandpaper. Then after I regain feeling in my hands, I bought a rotary tool, bravado through many stripping bits. A little discoloration left on the rails is groovy for a overnice "weathered" look. Due to the tracks rarity I did not want to subject information technology to any harsh solvents except for rubbing the runway downward with a rag soaked with WD-forty [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] after removing any rust. Super O is tough to clean and no dip volition make up for adept ol' elbow grease. Nevertheless when you are done it volition exist well worth it, it cute track and has great cornball value. Then comes working with the Super O 112 remote switches, now you lot're really asking for problem!

Good Luck,

A. With regard to cleaning Lionel Super-O track: For mild tarnish both the tin plate rail and copper center rail, I employ Comet cleanser, right out of the can, and a soft natural bristle palm size fingernail brush. I use small amounts of Comet to wetted brush and utilise light pressure on the rail and copper being careful to not allow too much cleanser on the ties. Employ brushing strokes 'along' the rails from long edge of brush. Rinse often under running water in sink. Rinsing helps to keep the bleach in the cleanser from whitening the ties. Rinse and dry out thoroughly, hair dryer works well. When track and ties are dry, apply Armour-All sparingly to ties with clean terry rag to restore gleam and luster. I have Super-O sections I cleaned 5 years ago on the layout and they still sparkle. Never use harsh sandpaper on rail surfaces. Very fine emery or Bright-Boy is OK. Happy railroading.

A. Avoid using steel wool to clean tracks. Pocket-sized pieces break off and tend to become picked up past the locomotive's wheels and damage it. (meet the Lionel Web site: http://world wide web.lionel.com/ForTheHobbyist/GeneralTipsAndFAQs/MaintTips.cfm)

A. I use a glass beader and I use 120 dust aluminum oxide to make clean the rail, then hit the top of the rail with a wire bike, so spray them down with WD-40 [affil. link to info/production on Amazon].

A. Cleaning Super O runway,

From my experience of working with Super O rails I take plant a very satisfactory solution to make Super O rails to look nearly new. As we all know nearly of the Super O runway nosotros find today has very tarnished rails. While this does non effect the functioning of the rail it is not very nice to look at confronting those dainty dark-brown ties. Later a number of tries I came up with this solution. I paint the rails with True Value chrome paint. Information technology is called Short Cuts and comes in a small bottle which goes a long way. The color of the paint is called chrome.

All you need to practice is observe a small good artist brush and paint the rails. When painted the rail looks fantastic. After I have painted the rail I utilize a track cleaner like those used to make clean LGB track. Mikes Train House besides makes a similar production to clean the top of the runway. It sounds like a lot of work just it really is non and the effort is well worth the reward when you information technology finished.

A. After reading about Comet cleanser, I tried it and then saw my wife'due south Barkeepers Friend [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] on the counter. It is a cleanser and a polish. This works even better than Comet. I and then laissez passer a heavy Bronze Wool [affil. link to info/product on Amazon] over the rails to get off any rust or other stuff that didn't come off. Rinse it and get off any brass wool that may remain and dry the track with an old rag.
